As mentioned on previous pages, the conditions animals face on farms are inhumane and unpleasant. Typically, a farm brings a rolling green pasture and a big red barn on the countryside to mind. Sadly, this is no longer what "factory farms" look like today. A more accurate depiction of the truth is dirty, disgusting, windowless sheds, jam-packed with animals confined in cages. These animals will know nothing beyond confinement; they will never raise a family or live a meaningful life not to mention possibly never see the sun shine again. If I had just described a situation only one human being had to go through, most if not all of the country would see something wrong with it. However, instead of just one human, it is thousands to millions of animals that suffer this fate.
In order to cut costs to generate more profit, companies give animals the bare minimum to keep them alive up until the point they are slaughtered and sold. These companies are able to maximize output using methods like this, and only the animals pay the price. "Chickens are cheap; cages are expensive." wrote Bernard Rollins, an egg-industry expert. This is the mindset of American food industry, the mindset that needs to change.
Many people are in the dark about the true horrors of where their meat and other processed foods actually come from. Paul McCartney says, "if slaughterhouses had glass walls everyone would be vegetarian."
