Just as any political figure or celebrity receives criticism and those looking to slander them; activist groups face their fair share of censure. PETA is no exception to the rule and probably take more flak than most due to their confrontational nature and desire to be in the spotlight. Opponents of PETA find the group to extreme in its demands; humans cannot just stop using animals for food this very second. Obviously, this is correct because if that happened many people would starve and there would be food shortages. The end goal would be to stop animal consumption, but over time, not immediately. If funds used to slaughter and process animals was slowly allocated into production of an alternative food source, then over time, we could have both, a sustainable food source and animals being treated as animals instead of property.
Another argument against PETA is that they kill animals, the exact opposite of what they stand for. The idea that PETA kills for fun was spread by the CCF and they even created a website titled “PETA Kills Animals” in an attempt to discredit them. The CCF is backed by KFC, Outback Steakhouse, and other cattle ranchers who millions of healthy animals in captivity every year. In comparison, PETA does not “murder” animals in its shelters, but rather euthanizes them. Euthanasia is a difficult task, but the animals that are put down are already too old or sick and in a lot of pain due to mistreatment. As a result, they are already on the verge of death and nothing more can be done for them, so euthanasia is the only ethical thing left to do.

Many corporations who make large profits off of the slaughter of animals recognize PETA as a threat to their business and resort to slander in order to discredit them and derail their campaign. It is important that the public knows the truth behind what these greed-driven companies do in order to maintain their ways of life.
